Calà del Sasso Excursion

The Calà del Sasso excursion is a fascinating and at the same time quite difficult route, in fact, few other areas in the world offer the opportunity to face such a long and free staircase. It is a path of 4,444 steps that start from the hamlet of Valstagna, a municipality in the Valsugana and arrive up to the hamlet of Sasso di Asiago, in the Seven Municipalities Plateau, in the province of Vicenza. It is the longest staircase in Italy, in addition to being one of the longest in the world open to the public, to contend for this extraordinary record we find "The Adam's Peak" in Sri Lanka, which has 5,500 steps.

Calà del Sasso covers a height difference of 744 meters, and was built in the 14th century to be able to transport timber from the plateau to Valstagna, without passing through Gallio and Foza which asked for heavy duties. From here comes "Calà" or (drop-down), in fact in addition to the wood, merchandise and people also descended from this path. At the time, commercial exchanges were very difficult, and in the plains they were very hungry for timber, so once they got to the valley the trunks were transported by the current through Bassano and Padova, up to the Arsenale of Venice where they were used for ship building.

The result of this extraordinary work is a very long staircase carved into the rock, flanked by a concave cobbled channel. The path starts from the second bend of the road that from Valstagna leads to Foza, where a small stretch of white road leads to the beginning of the CAI 778 path.

We find the Fonte Bessele at 255 meters and a small welcoming wooden structure, where inside a panel tells an ancient legend of 1638, according to which "if two lovers walk the Calà together hand in hand, they will love each other forever".

The excursion is suitable for anyone, the route is quite popular with strolling people and families, thanks also to the well-kept road surface.
