In this chapter we discuss the excursion of the Alta via del Tabacco, a spectacular journey immersed in stories, legends and nature.

The Alta via del Tabacco is a historic route located in the Vicentine Pre-Alps along the Valsugana, more precisely on the right side of the Brenta River. This suggestive path traces some ancient communication routes between the terraces, where tobacco was grown between 1630 and 1960.

This territory is surrounded by high rocky walls, such as that of Mount Grappa and the Seven Municipalities Plateau, which offers characteristic and poetic views, with small villages perched on the banks of the Brenta River.

The Alta Via del Tabacco

This morphological structure of the territory needed, in order to bring home the loaf of bread necessary for eating, the only strength of the arms and back, mostly of women and children, since very often men were abroad to work. To revolutionize this poor economy was an exotic plant, tobacco, which they cultivated for centuries among these valleys, thus guaranteeing a minimum of subsistence to families.

Of this centuries-old cultivation, today the memory remains in the typical terraces supported with high dry stone walls, the "masiere" which rise up to 400/500 meters above the Brenta level. To connect these gardens and the districts of the valley bottom with the mountains, we find the Trodi del Tabacco, which thus allows the inhabitants of the territory that minimal social life that hard work did not allow, allowing courtesy visits, exchanges of household goods and genders various, in short, a prompt help in case of need, as well as a safe escape to smugglers who ran away from the financiers.

The Alta Via del Tabacco is a total of 32 kilometers long, with a difference in altitude of 2400 meters, with a single climb, and the maximum altitude that can be reached is 650 meters, in the Col dei Sassi area. The itinerary starts from the Ponte Vecchio of Bassano del Grappa and follows the right bank of the Brenta river to the locality of Sarson, from where you take the path that goes up Mount Costa, passing by the hermitage of San Bovo.

Londa - The Alta Via del Tabacco

Reached Caluga di Valrovina, the path continues north, always remaining in the middle of the coast and with not too demanding ups and downs, until reaching Costa di Valstagna. The route is divided into three stages, all signposted and well practicable, it can also be done in the opposite direction, that is from Costa di Valstagna to Bassano del Grappa, perhaps from a logistical point of view it is more favorable. We recommend a calm pace, to enjoy the wonderful landscape that will surround you.
