In this chapter we deal with a unique and very characteristic place, not very frequented by tourists and still natural, the Sant Erasmo Island.

The Sant Erasmo Island is a green oasis immersed in the Venetian lagoon, which still maintains its agricultural vocation today, thanks to the few inhabitants present who continue to preserve the traditions of this magical place. It is the largest island in the lagoon, located near the famous and colorful island of Burano, the peaceful island of Mazzorbo and Punta Sabbioni, an ideal starting point with the vaporetto to visit these places.

The Sant Erasmo Island

It is a very characteristic place, surrounded by myths and legends in a particularly fragile territory, made up of numerous sand banks and thin strips of land. To visit the Sant Erasmo Island well, and cover the circumnavigation of about 9 kilometers, you would need a bicycle, in order to go into the vegetable gardens and cultivated fields and admire some suggestive glimpses of this beautiful island.

The Sant Erasmo Island

Just wandering around to understand why it was and still is the vegetable garden of the city of Venezia, so much so that its vegetables are still sold on the Rialto market stalls. The violet artichoke is the undisputed king of the island and certainly one of the most loved products by the Venetians.

On an artistic level, the Sant Erasmo Island does not offer much to visit, but its natural beauty and its summer sunsets over the lagoon are priceless. Do not miss the Torre Massimiliana, erected above the foundations of a French fort, is surrounded by a large moat and was placed here to defend the mouth of Lido harbor.

The Sant Erasmo Island

The typical festivals are that of the must, organized on the first and second Sunday of October, dedicated to Torbolino, a wine of white grapes not fully fermented, light and sweet, also the typical violet artichoke festival, which takes place on the second Sunday of May, and organizes tastings and sales of local products.
