In this chapter we discuss one of the most important cities of Venice, a way of passage of the province, San Donà di Piave.

San Donà di Piave, nestled in the low Venetian plain, is located a few kilometers from the Venetian lagoon, is divided by the river Piave following the hydraulic interventions implemented by the Serenissima in the sixteenth century.

San Donà di Piave

The name of the city derives from San Donato Vescovo, who died in a victorious crusade in the Holy Land. The fame of this saint, in a short time, spread rapidly, so much so that to make him burden and glory a chapel was built along the course of the Piave river. Around 1550, however, due to a tremendous flood, the course of the Piave was modified and the ancient chapel remained on the opposite bank of the river, in the municipality of Musile di Piave.

To visit we find the cathedral of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the main place of worship in the city, structured in a single nave covered by a barrel vault, softened by Corinthian half-columns and a series of panels depicting the apostles.

To the right of the cathedral stands the majestic bell tower, 74 meters high, among the largest in the Veneto, to complete the structure we find a bronze statue of an angel, with the right arm raised up and the left arm holding the sword.

Throughout the territory of San Donà di Piave there are numerous parks, among which the Park of Sculpture in Architecture stands out, which includes among its trees different installations and sculptures by artists, architects and designers, much appreciated internationally by enthusiasts of art and architecture.

This wonderful park can be visited at any time of the year, but finds its utmost attention in the summer, when numerous cultural events and typical events are organized. A pretty city to be put on the list of things to do, also thanks to the nearby historic center of Venice, is turning into a passageway for many tourists.
