In this chapter we discuss one of the most beautiful, curious and characteristic cities of the province of Venezia, a real precious jewel, Chioggia.

Chioggia is a nice and lively seaside town, its Venetian-style buildings that rise on the canals and its ancient bridge seem to almost evoke the times of the Doges and the Serenissima Republic.

Chioggia - Ciclabile da Chioggia al Lido di Venezia

This spectacular city of art is located south of the province of Venice, and is an ideal point to discover the surrounding area, such as the islands and the lagoon of Venice, the walled cities of the province of Padova and the wild Po Delta Regional Park, in the province of Rovigo. It dates back to Roman times, when the inhabitants of the Venetian hinterland settled here, to escape the barbarian invasions.

Chioggia

To prove this, the geometric grid that distinguishes the city, formed by a "Cardo" that is the current Corso del Popolo, and by a "Decumanus", this, a scheme organized on two main orthogonal axes that meet in the center of the city . A major event that marked the city was the War of Chioggia, a hard clash provoked by the contrasts between Venice and Genoa, for dominion over the seas.

The fighting began when the Genoese attacked the city both from land and sea, setting fire to and plundering the town. Venice's reaction was immediate, and within a few months it was regained, under the guidance of Vettor Pisani and Carlo Zeno. Over the years, the politics and economy of Chioggia will be increasingly subordinate to the Venetian power, establishing a Major Council with which he represented the nobles and a Minor Council with executive power.

Chioggia - Ciclabile da Chioggia al Lido di Venezia - Weekend a Chioggia

Today it is also known as little Venezia, in fact this Venetian strip overlooking the Adriatic Sea will surprise you, and the magic of the calli, between the picturesque San Domenico and Lombardo canals will make your trip unique. Walking along the harbor, you can still admire the "bragozzi", typical boats with bright colors, docked at the pier.

To visit we find the spectacular Ponte Vigo, which closes the canal near the lagoon and from where there is the boat station for Pellestrina, the imposing Porta Garibaldi which stands with its Lion of San Marco, symbol of the Veneto pride and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, designed by Baldassare Longhena after the fire of 1623 which destroyed the previous building. It is a fairly simple construction, built with exposed bricks, some important works stand out inside, among which the masterpieces of Francesco Rosa and Jacopo Palma il Giovane stand out in the side altars.

From Tuesday to Sunday in the early morning, the characteristic fish market of Chioggia takes place in the Pescheria, supplied directly by fishermen returning from the sea. Do not miss the Palio della Marciliana, a historical re-enactment of the Chioggia War, which takes place in mid-June, with historical processions between the districts of the city, and the famous Fish Festival that celebrates the flavors of the sea along Corso del Popolo in the middle July. Not far away we find the seaside resort of Sottomarina, particularly loved for the many services it offers, for the quality of its very fine sand, recommended for psammotherapy and for a perfect tan.
