In this chapter we treat the pretty and peaceful Campese, located at the beginning of the green and amazing Valsugana Valley along the Brenta river.

The small Campese is located at the beginning of Valsugana, and it is a graceful and calm town in the province of Vicenza. Located a few kilometers from Bassano del Grappa, it offers numerous opportunities for outdoor sports, such as hiking in the Alta Via del Tabacco, or mountain bike trails along the Brenta River.

A natural area, where the slopes are covered with large forests or high rocky walls, all immersed in the extraordinary history of the Seven Municipalities Plateau and Grappa Mount.

Campese

These areas have been marked over the centuries by the spread of tobacco smugglers, who exploited the night and the dense woods, distributed and sold tobacco in the surrounding territories up to the Asiago plateau. Activity that developed in these areas due to some limitations on the part of the Republic of Venice in the sale of tobacco, which has been cultivated here freely for many years.

All this today has led to the enhancement of the paths and paths that the inhabitants of these areas used for smuggling, or even for the cultivation of gardens in the various terraces, cleaning them and transforming them into suggestive walks immersed in the legends of this valley.

Not far from the town we find the San Martino Pieve, a small Lombard church located on an older place of worship. Over the centuries it underwent numerous renovations, but still keeping its shape from 1660 intact. Some restorations from 1996 made it possible to find early medieval burials and fragments of Roman-era tiles. Furthermore, frescoes dating back to the 14th century have emerged. Inside we find above the altar the altarpiece of Girolamo da Ponte, depicting San Martino, Santa Lucia and the Madonna in glory.
