In this chapter we discuss one of the most beautiful, wildest and most fascinating areas of the whole plateau of the seven municipalities, the plain of Marcesina.

« But will there still be lovers who on a winter’s night, would let themselves be pulled on a sleigh by a generous horse across the plain of Marcesina soaked in moonlight? If they weren’t there, how sad the world would be ... » said Mario Rigoni Stern.

La Piana di Marcesina - Altopiano dei Sette Comuni

The plain of Marcesina is a vast plateau that extends for the most part in the Veneto region, except for the northernmost part which is in the territory of Trentino Alto Adige. Precisely because of its vastness and its flat morphology, it was formerly used by the shepherds of the Seven Municipalities for grazing cattle, so much so that very often they had to fight with the shepherds of the Valsugana, in order to continue to have control over it.

Marcesina

Over time, Marcesina also became part of the Federation of the Seven Municipalities, more precisely in 1311, thus creating an alliance pact that went on to constitute a small free and independent state on the plateau, until the French invasion of 1807. Like the rest of the Asiago plateau, this area was also marked by numerous war events during the First World War and, by bitter clashes, during the Liberation period between the partisans of the territory and the Nazi-fascist units.

Two major events that marked this territory, leaving behind the remains of bloody clashes, which had a strong impact especially on the vegetation and its many inhabited centers, which at the time were significantly damaged.

Forte Lisser - Marcesina

Today the plain is still used as pasture for the production of D.O.P. and many other food and wine products linked to the traditions of the area, which are expertly collected and processed in these lands. But above all, it has become a tourist place, frequented all year round by many tourists from all corners of the world. In summer to appreciate the colors of these exciting places and for the many breathtaking landscapes, ideal for excursions, mountain biking and horseback riding, and in winter, thanks to the white snow, it turns into natural scenarios of unprecedented beauty, where it is It is possible to practice cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, long snowshoeing and for the little ones we find tracks for the bob and the sled in the hundreds of kilometers of slopes.
A magical territory, often called the Finland of Italy, for the sensations that only a few places can give, immersed in an atmosphere of other times, far from the hustle and bustle of the city and from work stress. To see: if you pass by, it is nice to stop at the Church of San Lorenzo, still built in distant times and rebuilt after the First World War, where it was completely destroyed, except for the bell tower, which remained miraculously intact.
