In this chapter we discuss the Nuvolau Group, the famous mountain group for the Cima Averau 2.647 meters and the Passo Giaù that go through it.

The Nuvolau Group is one of the less extensive groups of the Dolomites in the province of Belluno but, despite this, it reserves hidden beauties and breathtaking views. It is located between the municipalities of San Vito di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo and can be reached by crossing the Falzarego pass or the Giaù pass.

The Nuvolau Group

The latter, in particular, is very famous for being one of the most surprising and hard steps of the Dolomites and this notoriety derives above all from the many stages of the Tour of Italy, from the Rallies and from the Marathons of the Dolomites that take place year after year. Moreover, every day, there are really many amateur cyclists and motorcyclists who face the ascent of Santa Lucia and the endless switchbacks, and then descend down to Cortina D’Ampezzo.

The Nuvolau Group

From Giaù Pass there are numerous paths suitable for all types of excursions, which wind their way through the Croda da Lago, the Nuvolau, the Averau and the Cinque Torri. The latter represent the most characteristic formations of the group, as they are formed almost entirely by Dolomia, the typical red rock of the Dolomites.

The most important spur, or the "Torre Grande" reaches a height of 2,361 meters, a very appreciated and admired giant, also for the simplicity in reaching it on foot or with the ski lifts.

Another important peak not to be missed is Averau Mount, which is also very coveted, rising up to 2,647 meters, to highlight the excursion leading to the Nuvolau refuge, at an altitude of 2,575 meters, considered one of the most spectacular and evocative terraces of the Dolomites. The Nuvolau group is one of the most popular areas of the Dolomites, a world heritage site, thanks to its accessibility, breathtaking views and the strong emotions it feels when crossing it.
