In this chapter we discuss one of the most important and suggestive mountain groups of the Dolomites, a World Heritage Site, the Cristallo Group.

The Cristallo Group, one of the most famous of the Ampezzo Dolomites and of the whole Cadore area, is a mountain massif that is not very extensive but which contains a rocky mass among the most impressive in the area.

Located in the province of Belluno, between the towns of Cortina d'Ampezzo and Misurina, the Cristallo Group is surrounded by the Sorapis Group, the Tre Croci Pass, the Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park and Monte Piana.

The Cristallo Group

The peaks that characterize this group are the Mount Cristallo of 3221 meters, the Piz Popena of 3152 meters, the Cima di Mezzo of 3154 meters and Cristallino d'Ampezzo of 3008 meters.

The first ascent to Mount Cristallo was performed by the Viennese climber Paul Grohmann together with the two Ampezzo guides S. Siorpaes and A. Dimai. One of the characteristics of this group is the shortage of crests and wild valleys, which make this place an ideal place for any type of excursion.

The Cristallo Group

The heights of Mount Pomagagnon, which borders the Ampezzo basin with its length and high peaks to the north, are also part of the imposing group. This spectacular mountain that rises behind Cortina d'Ampezzo seems to protect it and has a visual impact and a wonderful effect that are truly magnificent.
