In this chapter we treat one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a jewel located in Val Pettorina between the Dolomites, a World Heritage Site: Sottoguda.

Sottoguda, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is set at the mouth of the Gola dei Serrai at the foot of the Marmolada, which with its 3,342 meters is the highest mountain group of the Dolomites, a World Heritage Site. This pretty village, which still maintains the typical rural architecture of the Ladin tradition, offers peace, tradition and typical products. It is characterized above all by its ancient wooden barns, typical of these valleys and the small church dedicated to Saints Fabiano, Sebastiano and Rocco.

Sottoguda - Da Agordo a Sottoguda

In the course of history, Sottoguda, did not undergo great conquests, perhaps also thanks to its isolated position, which preserved for many years the cultural identity of the territory, enjoying also a strong autonomy, and still maintaining today for a good part of the population the ancient idiom.

Fienile di Sottoguda - Da Agordo a Sottoguda

This mountain center, in the eastern Alps, the last offshoot of the Val Pettorina, belongs to the Ladin Dolomite area, and is protected by the Ladin Institute of the Dolomites, which for years has been operating throughout the province of Belluno.

Before arriving in this pleasant village, it is mandatory to stop in the municipality of Rocca Pietore, one of the largest in the Agordino area, characterized by the fifteenth-century Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, in Gothic Alpine style with a spire bell tower.

Not to be missed are the Serrai di Sottoguda, a canyon of about 2 kilometers declared a natural reserve and an ideal place to capture the energy of nature. In this gorge, once the herds of cows and flocks passed to the high mountain pastures, today, however, in the summer period, the Serrai Natural Park becomes an ideal destination for families, who can visit it on foot, in bike or on board the train.

Sottoguda - Uno dei borghi più belli del Veneto

This suggestive gorge is a unique attraction of its kind, as it was generated by a strong earthquake and, later on, shaped by the erosion of the Pettorina stream, which carved the rocky walls for hundreds of meters of height. Another attraction are the waterfalls, which in the winter become a gym for ice climbers, considered among the most famous in Europe.

Another visit of great interest is that at the Great War Museum in Marmolada, located in the intermediate station of Serauta, at an altitude of 2,950 meters, and is considered the highest on the continent. Inside we find an interactive, multimedia and multi-sensory path, which exposes the theme of war in the high mountains through a mosaic of environments.

From the entrance ramp, reminiscent of a bridge suspended in the crevasse, to the "city of ice" excavated by the soldiers during the war in the belly of the glacier, to the "gallery of life" an evocative journey inside a tunnel, up to " trench of death ”.
