In this chapter we discuss one of the most known and visited areas in the world, famous for its profile and the high cliffs, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo, located along the border line between the province of Belluno and Bolzano, are the symbol of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site and are considered among the most famous natural wonders in the world. Looking from the north, they vaguely resemble three fingers pointing towards the sky, compact and harmoniously aligned, a unique and spectacular profile of extreme interest and fame in the world of mountaineering. In the center stands the Cima Grande of 2.999 meters, the highest of them, the second is the Cima Ovest of 2.973 meters and the last is Cima Piccola of 2.857 meters.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The first ascents took place between the southern walls of the mountain group, between 1869 and 1881, but the first to reach the Great Summit was the Viennese Paul Grohmann, accompanied by the guides Franz Innerkofrel and Peter Salcher. Instead the first ascent to the Cima Piccola, considered at the time among the most difficult, was of the guide Michel Innerkofler in 1881.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Within the area around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo you can do, for lovers of outdoor activities, a wide range of sports such as mountain biking, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, road biking, fishing and paragliding.

A must is the "Tour of the Three Peaks", an excursion that allows you to fully admire these natural monuments in every facet. It starts from the Rifugio Auronzo, through the Rifugio Lavaredo, the Rifugio Locatelli, up to Malga LangAlm.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

This route allows, with deviations, to visit a surprising work of military engineering in the Galleries of Paterno Mount, which with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo between 1915 and 1917, constituted a front of the Great War, between the Italians and the Austrians.  Even today there are the remains of trenches, tunnels and barracks, to remind us of those men who fought hard, under enemy fire, during the harsh winters of the Dolomites

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The current border, resumed after the bitter conflicts of the Great War, coincides with that of the Holy Roman Empire, established in 1752 with the Treaty of Rovereto by the Doge Francesco Loredan and Maria Teresa of Austria, passing exactly along the north wall of the Tre Cime. Around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo there is a wide network of trails suitable for every type of hiking, while some equipped paths and via ferrata, allow you to reach observation points.
