The incredible structure of Castelvecchio was originally called San Martino Castle in Aquaro, and is the most important military monument of the Scaligeri family.

The Castelvecchio

Located along the river Adige, this extraordinary building was built by Cangrande II della Scala in 1300 BC, and was used for many centuries as a fortress and military barracks. What is striking is its imposing appearance, its decidedly military forms, accentuated by the battlements that follow each other along the walls and from the seven towers.

The Castelvecchio

This marvelous fortress is formed by the Castelvecchio Bridge, also called the Scaligero bridge, a typically medieval construction, considered one of the most audacious works of the Veronese Middle Ages. The bridge was exclusively reserved for the Dalla Scala family, and represented an escape route or a way to enter the city from the north, today it is one of the totally pedestrian bridges that cross the Adige river.

The Castelvecchio Museum

In the ancient manor we find the Museum of Castelvecchio, one of the most important in the city, thanks to the paintings, sculptures and weapons present in the various rooms, dating back to the Lombard era until the 1700s. All this was raised on the edge of the city center, where in Roman times a defensive structure already existed, with the aim of acquiring a fortress and at the same time a princely residence.

Nearby we find the Arco dei Gavi, built in the first century between the reign of Augustus and the reign of Tiberius by the architect Vitruvio Cerdone, and is a monumental Roman architecture with a height of 12 meters.

It is characterized by a structure based on two main fronts, connected on the shorter sides by two smaller arches. The white stone used to build it comes from Valpolicella and the blocks were transported to Verona through navigation on the Adige river.
