In this chapter we discuss one of the most characteristic and fascinating cities in the province of Verona, Valeggio sul Mincio.
Valeggio sul Mincio is a pretty and lively city crossed by the Virgilio and Seriola Prevaldesca canals, two waterways that originate from the river Mincio. The history of this city, located on the border with the Lombard lands, was marked by famous Italian Risorgimento battles that left behind fortifications that still today dominate the landscape.
Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the mighty and elegant Scaliger Castle was built on the top of the hill, with the aim of dominating the entire Mincio valley and the picturesque village Borghetto, famous for its mills and one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Among these ancient walls several legends are still told, including that of a ghost in search of his sword and his lost honor.
Don’t leave without eatign the famous Tortellino of Valeggio sul Mincio , created with a thin egg-shaped puff pastry which is thin as silk, then cut, knotted and enriched with a tasty filling. In June this typical specialty is celebrated by organizing the "Festa del Nodo d'Amore", in memory of the compelling love between Silvia and Captain Malco blossomed between the castle walls.
