In this chapter we discuss one of the most photographed and most famous bridges in the world, the only one of its kind, the Bridge of Sighs.
According to legend, the Bridge of Sighs, built in Baroque style of Istria in 1600 on the Rio di Palazzo, was built to connect the Palazzo Ducale with the New Prisons. It owes its name, in fact, precisely to the complaints of the prisoners who, crossing it to go to the offices of the feared inquisitors, issued numerous complaints and sighs.
Precisely for this reason the bridge was baptized with this name towards the end of the nineteenth century. It should be noted that the New Prisons are the first building in the world to be specifically a prison.
