In this chapter we discuss one of the most characteristic and extraordinary buildings in the province of Treviso, the Castle of San Salvatore in Susegana.
The city of Susegana is inextricably linked to the Collalto family. This noble family of Lombard origin, between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, moved to the town of Susegana from Treviso, later founding the castles of Collalto and San Salvatore. The latter expanded rapidly enough to be considered one of the largest castles in northern Italy with its thirty thousand square meters between fortress and village.
Impregnated throughout the Middle Ages, the castle saw the blossoming of an extraordinary artistic season, with painters, poets, musicians and writers. The Old Chapel welcomes the cycle of frescoes by Pordenone while the palaces are enriched with works by the great Venetian masters of the time.
