A dream place, lively and particularly characteristic, made up of two beautiful villages in the same municipality, that of Borghetto and that of Valeggio sul Mincio. Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the mighty and elegant Scaligero Castle was built on the top of the hill, with the aim of dominating the entire Mincio valley and the picturesque village Borghetto, famous for its mills and one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Originally the structure boasted a parade ground, residential buildings, a castle courtyard and high walls with four mighty towers, until Giangaleazzo Visconti in the fourteenth century inserted a fifth, the highest.
At one time the Rocca was accessed through drawbridges, and the only one that still remains today, led at the time to the castle, of which only the ruins of the perimeter walls survive, which include a private villa from the early twentieth century. You can reach the Rocca by following a narrow road surrounded by greenery, where we find the ancient Tonda Tower, which with the other three, formed the fortified structure of the previous era, which was finally incorporated.
Several legends still lie between these old walls, including that of a ghost in search of his sword and his lost honor. In fact, it is said that inside the tower the sword of a murdered knight was walled, and that it occurs on nights of full moon and storm, in search of the weapon with which he fought in life, and his soul will have no peace until he finds it.
Among the things to visit are the 14th century Visconteo Bridge, built by the Duke of Milan, Giangaleazzo Visconti, with the aim of ensuring the impenetrability of the eastern borders of the duchy. Once connected to the Scaligero Castle with two high crenellated curtains, which extended for over 15 kilometers in the vast Veronese plain.
