In this chapter we discuss one of man’s most incredible and surprising works, located in the heart of Valsugana, The Covolo of Butistone.
The Covolo of Butistone is a natural cave suspended over the rocky cliff above the Brenta river, located at the narrowest point of the Valsugana. This ancient military fortification barred, until the end of the seventeenth century, the Brenta canal between Primolano and Cismon del Grappa. For centuries the fortress remained the strategic imperial outpost and, its military history, ended with Napoleon.
