In this chapter we deal with one of the largest municipalities of the plateau, rich in traditions and sports activities throughout the year: we’re talking about Gallio.
Gallio is the highest municipality of the plateau and, with its 1093 meters above sea leavel, is also the highest municipality in the province of Vicenza. Today is an active and living municipality but it was entirely looted by the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the First World War. Always linked to Gallio are the “Melette”, a group of mountain ranges whose highest peak is Monte Fior with its 1824 meters.
Although today they represent a destination both for winter skiing and for alpine skiing enthusiasts, and a good destination in summer for the bike park, in the past these mountains were the scene of bloody and bitter battles, as the writer Emilio Lussu also recalls and writes in “A Year on the High Plateau”.
The rare and precious pearl of this municipality is the church of the small town of Stoccareddo, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, unique for its Gothic-Alpine lines on the outside and its “liberty” style on the inside.
Country festival of Stoccareddo: “Festa del Villeggiante”, which takes place every year between July and August. Country festival of Gallio: “Festa di San Bartolomeo”, held on 24th August.
