In this chapter we discuss one of the most beautiful and fortified towns of Lake Garda, famous for its high walls, Peschiera del Garda.
To enter Peschiera del Garda, cross the bridge over the Mincio river and Porta Verona, an imposing entrance gate in the sixteenth century, where you can still see the signs of the base where the Lion of San Marco stood out, destroyed by Napoleonic troops , and the inscription in Latin placed to warn foreigners. To see is the Quadrilateral Fortress, (so named for its shape), which was built by the Austrians in the nineteenth century, replacing a stronghold of the fifteenth century.
Today Peschiera is one of the main cities of Garda, thanks to the wonderful position that occupies both on the banks of the lake, and the river Mincio, which descends from here to the Po. In the city you will not find the calm and the intimacy that you breathe south along the Mincio, in the magic that can give the Lake of Grada, and yet Peschiera will remain in your hearts like few other cities.
