In this chapter we discuss one of the most beautiful and typical areas of Venezia, located along the banks of the river Brenta, Stra.
Stra is a town in the Venetian province that stretches along the Riviera del Brenta, in an area characterized by numerous villas and palaces. It consists of three residential centers: the smallest is on the left bank of the Naviglio del Brenta, while the two larger hamlets, San Pietro and Paluello, extend along the right bank. After the War of the League of Cambrai, in the sixteenth century, Stra became effectively Venetian territory and, thanks to its propensity to agriculture, soon became a destination for a quiet stay of the nobility of the Serenissima, which during this time built along the Riviera del Brenta numerous villas, like the famous Villa Pisani.
Villa Pisani, also called the "Nazionale", is a magnificent eighteenth-century building that represents one of the major Italian architectural heritages. Designed by Girolamo Frigimelica in 1721 for the noble Venetian family of Pisani, this majestic villa houses numerous works and important frescoes, such as the famous "Apotheosis of the Pisani Family" by Giambattista Tiepolo. Today this charming villa, with 168 rooms, is home to a national museum, which preserves works of art and furnishings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
