Jacopo Robusti, better known as Tintoretto was born in Venice on 29th  April 1519 and was one of the greatest exponents of the Venetian school and probably the last great Renaissance painter. He lived all his life in the Cannaregio District, in the palace known today as the Tintoretto House, until his death on 31 May 1594.

The nickname "Tintoretto" derived from his father's trade, dyer of silks. A devout Christian, he developed an individual and theatrical style, characterized by an even exaggerated use of light and movement, by the audacity of the perspectives, and by fluid and energetic brushes.
