between the water,

under the hazy Ajàrnola"

Auronzo di Cadore

The spectacular town of Auronzo di Cadore stretches over a vast green valley and includes Misurina, with its lake, and the entire area around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, one of the most touristic areas of the Dolomites World Heritage Site. The area is crossed by the Ansiei river which, thanks to the ancient dam built in 1931, forms the artificial lake of Santa Caterina or Lake Auronzo with its characteristic emerald green color which makes it an attraction not to be missed.

A walk around the lake will allow us to contemplate the natural wonders that surround it, such as the large forests of firs and beeches, the perfect place to take boat trips, canoe, ski and skating during the winter, admiring the splendid rocky setting of this framework, which runs from Cadini di Misurina to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo up to the Croda dei Toni. On the left bank of the lake runs the cycle-pedestrian path of Auronzo, which leads up to Misurina for the most trained, through beautiful landscapes. The first section around the lake can be covered on foot or by bicycle, also suitable for families with a stroller or for a simple picnic.

To be savored in this place rich in flavor we find: the famous Potato gnocchi with Auronzana, seasoned with melted butter and smoked ricotta and Polenta Gnocchi, seasoned with game ragù. I Casunziei, ravioli typical of the territory filled with potatoes, beetroot red or yellow, ricotta, pumpkin and chives. Pastin, a minced pork, beef and lard flavored with spices, presented in large meatballs that cook on the grill. The many cheeses, from those of the Civetta of various ages to those of the Piave DOP or the fresh sausages such as the soppressata and the luganeghe, or the sausages from here. Among the desserts we mention the kodinze, which are slices of round sun-dried apples.

Do not miss the Sagra di San Lucano, organized in Villapiccola di Auronzo di Cadore during the weekend of July, a typical festival of Cadore area with dancing and music.

Local proverb:

"Maña bòča, maña ke daspò te vas a kopà l'órse de San Luguan"
" Eat child, eat, after you go to kill the bear of San Lucano"

Said referring to the statue of San Lucano sitting on the bear placed above the main entrance of the dedicated Church.
